Draw me Nearer

SCRIPTURE: "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double-minded." James 4:8

Introduction

Have you ever noticed that the closer you get to something valuable, the more you can see its true worth? A diamond looks ordinary from a distance, but when you draw near, the light bouncing from its edges takes your breath away. The same is true with God. From afar, He may look like just another option in life, but when you draw near, you see His power, His peace, and His purpose shining bright.

There are many moments when our hearts cry out for nearness to God. In times of grief, we long for His comfort. David said in Psalm 34:18, The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart. When our lives are shaken by storms, we need His strength. Isaiah reminded us in Isaiah 41:10, Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee. When we face tough decisions, we need His wisdom. Solomon taught in Proverbs 3:6, In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. In every situation, closeness to God gives us what distance never can.

We see examples all around us. A child feels safer holding their parent’s hand when crossing a busy street. A soldier stands taller when he knows his commander is near. Even in our culture, we say, If you walk with the wise, you’ll grow wise yourself. Nearness changes everything. A prayer whispered in a hospital room, a hymn sung at a graveside, a testimony shared in hard times—all are reminders that when we get closer to God, He gets closer to us.

Current events remind us of this truth as well. In a world filled with wars, storms, and uncertainties, people are searching for stability. Politicians argue, money fails, and health fades, but those who stay near to God still find peace in chaos. Nearness to Him does not erase the trouble, but it does bring strength to face it.

As Christians, our prayer is simple: Draw me nearer. We believe there is always something to be gained from staying close to God. Stay close, and He helps us to understand. Stay close, and He gives us strength to stand. Stay close, and He leads us into His wisdom and His will. The desire of our souls is not riches, not fame, not power—it is to be nearer to God, because nearness to Him is life itself.
